1 have done it for six months now and find it very exhausting walking.

The Postmaster General gets an allowance of $10 a month for a specific purpose visiting branch offices and the amount of accumulations in my own office it entails is most troublesome. I should be very glad to see the duty and the allowance transferred to the Assistant Postmaster General.

Most officers tiffin at their offices very frequently have to breakfast also (at the Hotel) which is not done for nothing. During the 28 days between Monday the 24th July and Sunday the 20th instant inclusive, I tiffined 25 days at my office (one of the days I did not being Monday the 7th instant a bank holiday) and I shall tiffin 7 days this week.

10.

No other Government office is open at 7 A.M. and all the other officers whether in the Public Works, Medical, Botanical, or the Registrar General's Department, who receive chair allowance, would not use his chair so frequently at 6 A.M. as I would mine.

11.

I live at the Peak not because I particularly like it but because I must. I was living there when the appointment of Postmaster General was bestowed on me and the rent of the houses on European levels in the town is beyond my means. I should equally ask for a chair allowance if I lived at East or West points or on the Robinson Road. Unless in Government quarters, I do not think the Government would like to see the head of a Department living in Wyndham Street. I have now stated the facts fully and would respectfully beg that you lay this my application before His Excellency the Governor for his favourable consideration.

I have the honour to be

Sir,

Your obedient servant

(Sd) W.C.H. Hastings

Postmaster General.
